The United States imposes sanctions on Turkey over Russian weapons

The United States has announced sanctions against its NATO ally Turkey over its move to buy a Russian-built long-range missile defense system that it bought last year.

The United States says the use of the S-400 system is contrary to Nato technology and poses a threat to its European and Atlantic allies.

The sanctions, announced by the foreign ministry on Monday, targeted Turkey's arms deal.

The sanctions have been strongly condemned by Turkish and Russian and Russian officials.
